Teak Restoration and Cleaning

Is your boat showing its age with a dull, faded, or discolored appearance? Don’t let teak restoration take away from your boat’s natural beauty. At Sunrise Marine Detailing, we offer two proven approaches to teak restoration: a Buff and Wax service for light to moderate teak restoration, and a Full Restoration with wet sanding for boats that need deeper correction. Either way, we bring your gel coat back to life.

Not every boat needs the same treatment. That’s why we offer two distinct packages, so you pay for the work your boat actually needs and nothing more.

Buff and Wax is our most popular service for boats with light to moderate teak restoration or a dull gel coat. Using professional-grade marine compounds and polishes, we cut through the haze and restore a deep, glossy finish. Faster turnaround and more affordable than a full restoration, and the right fit for most boats in the Tampa Bay area.

Full Restoration is for boats with heavy teak restoration, chalky gel coat, or years of neglect. We wet sand to fully remove the teak restoration layer, then follow with multi-stage compound, polish, and a protective wax or ceramic finish. It’s the deepest correction we offer.

Not sure which one your boat needs? Send us a few photos and we’ll tell you honestly. Most boats do great with a buff and wax.

Teak Restoration and Cleaning in Tampa Bay

Florida’s sun and moisture destroy teak faster than anywhere else. Our teak restoration service brings weathered, gray, and blackened teak back to its original warm honey tone, then seals it for lasting protection.

What We Do

Our teak restoration process is thorough and built specifically for marine teak in Florida conditions:

  • Deep clean with marine-grade teak cleaner to remove dirt, mold, and fish oil stains
  • Brightening treatment to restore the natural golden color
  • Hand-sanding with fine grit to smooth the grain and remove surface damage
  • Two-coat teak sealer application for UV and moisture protection
  • Hardware masking to protect surrounding gelcoat and stainless

Common Teak Problems We Fix

Gray and Weathered Teak

Sun exposure breaks down teak’s natural oils, turning it gray. This is the most common issue we see and also the easiest to fix. A proper clean, brighten, and seal brings it back in one visit.

Black Mold and Mildew Stains

Florida’s humidity is brutal on teak. Black spots and mildew growth are common, especially on teak in shaded areas or on boats kept in covered slips. Our cleaning process kills mold at the root and the sealer helps prevent it from coming back.

Rough and Splintering Teak

Neglected teak develops a rough, splintering surface that is uncomfortable to walk on barefoot. Hand-sanding restores a smooth finish. We do not use power sanders on marine teak, as they remove too much material and shorten the life of the wood.

Why Not Just Oil It?

Many boat owners use teak oil as a quick fix. The problem is that oil attracts dirt and mold in Florida’s humid climate. It also needs reapplication every 2 to 4 weeks. A proper sealer lasts 3 to 6 months, keeps the teak cleaner, and requires less maintenance between applications.

Pricing

Teak restoration is quoted per job based on the amount of teak, its condition, and accessibility. Send us photos of your teak and we will give you a free estimate. Most teak decks and rail packages run between $300 and $800 depending on the boat.

Service Area

We restore teak on boats across Tampa Bay: St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Tampa, Madeira Beach, Treasure Island, Apollo Beach, Tarpon Springs, and everywhere in between.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teak Restoration FAQ

Teak Restoration FAQs

Teak adds timeless elegance to a boat but requires more maintenance than synthetic materials. Exposed teak turns gray and splinters; maintained teak stays warm-colored and smooth. The difference comes down to regular care.
Teak restoration runs $300 to $800+ depending on teak surface area, condition, and finishing choice. Large teak decks with heavy weathering sit at the high end.
True teak restoration involves cleaning with two-part teak cleaner (or careful sanding), neutralizing, brightening, and finally sealing or oiling. Shortcuts like pressure-washing destroy teak grain and shorten its life.
Teak oil gives a natural matte finish but needs reapplication every few months. Teak sealer (some are epoxy-based) lasts longer but looks less natural. We handle both; choose based on how much ongoing maintenance you want.
Even badly weathered, gray teak usually comes back with proper restoration. The wood underneath the weathered surface is still good. Splintered or heavily gouged teak may need replacement or repair, but most teak restores.
Teak restoration runs $300 to $800+ depending on teak surface area and condition. Small teak trim runs on the lower end; full teak decks or transoms run higher. Request a free quote for an exact price.
Yes. Gray, weathered teak almost always restores to warm natural color with proper two-part cleaner and brightener treatment. We do this regularly.
Depends on preference and maintenance tolerance. Oil gives a natural matte look and needs reapplication every 3 to 6 months. Sealer lasts longer (6 to 18 months) with less natural appearance. We help you choose based on your boat and how much ongoing work you want to do.
A teak restoration job typically runs 1 to 2 days depending on surface area and finish choice. Sealing adds drying time between coats.
With regular oiling, teak rarely needs full restoration. Neglected teak may need full restoration every 2 to 4 years. With sealer, restoration is needed less often — often just a refresh coat annually.
In Florida, teak sealer typically lasts 3 to 6 months depending on sun exposure and use. We recommend resealing twice a year for most boats.
Yes. We regularly restore teak that has gone gray, black, or rough from years of neglect. The wood underneath is usually in good condition. Send us photos and we will give you an honest assessment.
